Senator Henry Cabot Lodge
Occupation: After graduating Harvard Law school I, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, became a lecturer on American history at Harvard. I became a member of the House of Representatives for a number of years before retiring. Then, in 1893 I became a Republican Senator and served from March of 1893 until my death.
I believe that we need to annex the Filipinos for many reasons. Many of those opposed to the annexations say that we are forcing it upon people that do not wish for it and we should give them self-government. Unfortunately we cannot do that because they are not ready for self-government and that "gift" would be more of a curse. We need to slowly guide them on their way to freedom until they are able to be self-governing. Also, it will be good for the American public to help the strengthen and develope the troubled peoples of the Philippines.
In addition to the ability to help the people of the Philippines is the ability to help ourselves and our country, America. The commerce that these islands will open up will be extremely beneficial to America. The are abundant natural resources in these important islands and there are also markets for our iron, coal, locomotives and other important industries. It will be important for us to annex the Phillipines for both our interests and that of the people that have suffered under Spanish rule. We need to help them to become a stable people so they can sustain themselves and eventually self govern.
